§ 7-11. Required equipment; mode of operation.

  • (a)

    Every bicycle when in use in hours of darkness shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred (500) feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type which shall be visible from all distances from fifty (50) feet to three hundred (300) feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of five hundred (500) feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector. Every bicycle operated upon any public street during the time from one-half (½) hour after sunset to one-half (½) hour before sunrise and at any other time when there is not sufficient natural light to render discernible persons, vehicles and substantial objects on the highway at a distance of five hundred (500) feet ahead, shall display operating lights and reflectors as described above; and no person shall operate a bicycle at any such time or place unless such bicycle is so equipped.

    (b)

    No person shall operate a bicycle upon any public street unless it is equipped with a bell or other warning device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred (100) feet; except that a bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall any person use on a bicycle any siren or whistle.

    (c)

    No person shall operate a bicycle upon any public street unless it is equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make the brake wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement.

    (d)

    No person operating a bicycle upon any public street shall ride other than astride a permanent and regular seat attached thereto, nor shall carry any other person upon such bicycle other than upon a firmly attached and regular seat thereon; nor shall any person ride upon a bicycle other than such a firmly attached and regular seat.

    (e)

    No person shall operate a bicycle upon any public street in a manner to carry more persons at one (1) time than the number for which it is designed and equipped.
