§ 26-139. Deposit of coin; overtime parking; parking adjacent to expired meter.

  • (a)

    When any vehicle is parked in any parking space adjacent to which a parking meter and/or pay station is located in accordance with the provisions of this division, the operator of such vehicle shall, upon entering the parking space, immediately deposit or cause to be deposited a coin of the United States of America, Mexico, or a "Smart Card" in such parking meter, thereby causing such parking meter to display a sign or signal for the period of legal parking within the parking meter zone or space, and failure to deposit such coin or "Smart Card" shall constitute a misdemeanor. Upon deposit of such coin or "Smart Card" and placing such parking meter and/or pay station in operation, the parking space may be lawfully occupied by such vehicle during the period of parking time which has been prescribed for the portion of the street or parking zone in which the parking space is located and as designated on the meter and/or pay station. If the vehicle remains parked in any such parking space beyond the parking time limit fixed for such parking space, the parking meter shall, by its numeric reader, indicate such illegal parking and in that event such vehicle shall be considered as parked overtime and beyond the period of legal parking time, and the parking of a vehicle overtime or beyond the period of legal parking time in any such part of a street where any such meter is located shall be deemed a violation of this section. It shall be unlawful and a violation of this section for any person to cause, allow, permit or suffer any vehicle registered in his name or operated by him to be parked overtime or beyond the period of legal parking time established for any parking meter zone.

    (b)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to deposit or cause to be deposited in a parking meter and/or a pay station a coin for the purpose of increasing or extending the parking time of any vehicle beyond the legal parking time which has been established for the parking space adjacent to which the parking meter is placed.

    (c)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to permit a vehicle to remain in any parking space adjacent to any parking meter while the meter is displaying a signal indicating that the vehicle occupying such parking space has already been parked beyond the period of time prescribed for such parking space.

    (d)

    The provisions of this section shall apply and be effective between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on every day, except Sundays.
